Uniqueness of Higher Education in Europe

American Lawyer and educator and the former President of Harvard University once said, "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." So true it is!

Indian students when they think of taking education abroad, first are afraid of its cost. For any middle class family this cost becomes completely prohibitive and that stops the child from taking the plunge into the world class universities in the world.

However I must say, there are immense opportunities even for the children of middle class families to fulfil their aspirations of learning abroad, especially in Europe. Affordable tuition fees and chances of scholarship are the two most important factors which weigh in favour of education in Europe. When someone hears words such as 'affordable tuition fees', the fear that comes to mind is probably the quality of education may be compromised. But that is not so in Europe. Europe is one of the education hubs in the world. Governments, industries contribute significantly towards the higher education there because of which the universities can afford to charge very low tuition fees to the students while still keeping the quality of education top class.

There are many triple accredited universities in Europe. France, UK, Finland, Germany and Sweden are well-known for the very high quality of education as well as research oriented approach. Schengen visa ensures that one can be part of any of the 26 countries without the need of country specific visa. Student Exchange programmes facilitate taking experience of more than one university during the course of education for the student.

One is also under the impression that teaching may be happening in local European languages in Europe. But this fear is not true because there are many courses (especially at Master's level) which are taught in English. Either IELTS score or interview with the student helps the university to assess English capability of the student.

Larger emphasis on practical oriented education ensures that Europe does not add 'unemployable educated' people to the world. Excellent Industry-academia partnership in Europe makes the higher education well sought after in the entire world.

Erasmus Mundus

You may be wondering after seeing the title of this post, what is this Erasmus Mundus all about! Well it is a student exchange programme implemented in Europe. Europe is a continent where education is not commoditized and not commercialized too. Quality of education is supreme there and student's requirements are given due attention to. Hence there is a student exchange programme which is widely run there and it is applicable to the students undergoing Master programmes. Europe being largely covered by Schengen Visa, the student does not need to bother about taking another ...
